Woodhead fire

Just found out today about a fire burning on the Cecil Andrus access property. It's something that some of you from out of state might take a look at. Especially if that's one of your go to locations.

It started two days ago just before we got some heavy winds. It quickly blew into 28,000 acres. For the most part it's burning north and east of the road leading to Woodhead but has already burned some prime upland bird habitat. I've just seen a preliminary map but it looks like Grade creek and Camp creek are gone. From there it looks like it's heading toward the timber.

It's been breezy all day so I'm sure it's still causing some damage and hard to get a handle on. When I get a better map of the fire I'll try and post it if anyone wants but for now you might keep that in mind as you prepare for the hunting season.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the update. I agree, its going to change the hunting dynamics especially for those traveling to hunt the area. I would be curious to know if the fire moves fast enough to kill the birds or if they are easily able to fly out of harms way? If so, some of the margins around the fire could be really good. Counting the days until the season starts. Will probably sit out the first weekend to let things cool off. Cheers.

Any word if the fires have been contained yet?

Just looked and it says there is 0% containment as of two hours ago. With that being said the acreage is about the same as yesterday and the burn map looks the same. I was hoping for a little more information but it sounds like the highway into Woodhead campground is closed.

federal order has just closed all fed grounds above Cecil andrus until October 15th, or when reopened by fire managers. there is a map on the nfci fire page search woodhead fire. 5-10,000$ fine if caught in there. both on the north side and south side of hwy 71, . I was in the brownlee area today on main roads. The grass from big spring rains is tall and a wet sneeze could start a fire. Oregon blm is closing campgrounds Washington DNR is closing ground and I could see the pattern roll into other states if we do not get rain soon. everyone needs to be extremely careful with vehicles on the desert ranges.

This will certainly impact a lot of hunters. Access to a lot of great chukar country is going to be closed. Anybody have any bird report, waiting for IDFG to report their 2020 bird forecast. Based on reports from Nevada and Oregon looks like bird numbers are spotty this year.

It looks a little spotty in Idaho also but I believe there are many late hatches that will bring the counts up to at least average for the year. I heard a bad report about quail but I've seen more little quail in August this year than I can ever remember. Driving to a grouse spot we were playing dodge quail on the road. Hopefully the huns and chukars have done as well.

IDFG upland forecast are out. Looks like bird numbers are mixed across the southwest portion of the state. I confirmed with the habitat biologist at Andrus that the chuker populations around Brownlee are low this year.
